Assistive Technology

JAWS – Screen reading software (Blind or Low Vision) (PC ONLY)

  • Screen reading software, will read most text on the screen, which is accessible with the screen reader, using keyboard commands
  • Activated from icon on the desktop, in the start menu, or in the Assistive Technology folder

ZoomText – Screen enlarging software (Low Vision) (PC ONLY)

  • Enlarges everything on the screen from 2X – 16X magnification
  • Speech can also be activated to speak as it the cursor passes a word
  • Available on all lab computers
  • Activated from icon on the desktop, in the start menu, or in the Assistive Technology folder

Kurzweil 3000 – Scanning software for the Learning Disabled (LD) (PC & MAC)

Allows scanning of materials that will be read back and highlighted at various speed, colors, sizes for users with learning disabilities. This is Not an OCR program, it will scan what it sees, the ways it sees it, however, if the text quality is poor, the read back will be poor. (ie, poor quality originals, lines, notes, shaded areas with text, highlighters, smudges, (mainly found in used textbooks) will all make poor quality scans.)

Dragon Naturally Speaking – Voice recognition software (Physical or LD) (PC ONLY)

Speak into a microphone connected to the computer and it will type what you DICTATE to it, it will also activate commands spoken into the microphone.
