Using the Libraries

Patrons with Disabilities

The University Library is committed to providing equal access to services and collections for all library patrons. Where self-use of library services or facilities are difficult, the Library will make provisions, as needed, to permit users with disabilities to examine sources, retrieve materials, and access services. Adaptive technologies are available in the University Library to assist patrons with learning disabilities, low vision, or blindness.

Register with the campus Accessibility Services (AS) in LI 2400 for training on the equipment. Accessibility Services also provides a variety of academic accommodations and support services to individuals with temporary or permanent disabilities.

Equipment

A workstation, on a wheelchair accessible table, contains a special scanner, trackball, and the assistive technology software listed below. There is also a Sorenson Video Relay Service which allows deaf and hard of hearing individuals to have telephone conversations with hearing people. These workstations are available for use in the Learning Commons (first floor, CORE Library building) during all hours that the library is open.

Software

Kurzweil 3000 – an advanced multi-sensory approach to reading for students with learning disabilities. It displays an on-screen version of any printed material, provides read aloud web pages, and permits materials to be scanned and displayed.

ZoomText – a magnification and reading program that is tailored for users with low vision.

JAWS (Job Access With Speech) – a screen reading program designed for users with low vision and blindness. JAWS reads text out loud on the screen and allows the user to navigate the computer using only the keyboard. Headsets can be checked out at the Learning Commons front desk.

Fusion – a combination of ZoomText and JAWS to provide magnification and screen reading capabilities.

Dragon Naturally Speaking – a speech recognition program that allows users to dictate text and use voice commands to control the computer. A headset and microphone are available to borrow from the Learning Commons service desk.
