Finding Materials


There are two ways to find information about the collections available in the University Archives. You may use the libraries’ online catalog to search for completed finding aids, use the search box to find materials via the Online Archive of California, or use the original indices linked below. 

The Library's Online Catalog

You can search the library’s catalog to find records for our archival collections. However, not all records are available in the catalog yet. New entries are added as our staff completes detailed guides for the collections.

You can find the University Archives' guides and digital images through the Online Archive of California (OAC). To explore our collections, simply use the search box below.

  

Viewing Materials

 

To view materials from the University Archives, please schedule an appointment at least 48 hours in advance by emailing archives@csueastbay.edu or any of our archivists.
 

Reading Room Rules

These rules are designed to allow you access to the materials for research and also protect the materials for future researchers. We are grateful to you for abiding by these rules so that we can provide access to these resources for years to come. 
 

  • No food, drink, backpacks, purses, or laptop bags are allowed out in the Reading Room. You will be able to securely store your belongings in a locker. This is to ensure the safety of the materials.
  • Please wash your hands before using the materials. This helps preserve the materials.
  • You may use a laptop or pencil and paper to take notes. No pens are allowed in the reading room. Again, this is for the safety of the materials.
  • You may use a camera without flash to take photographs of the materials. These photographs are for your research use and allowing you to take photographs does not constitute permission to publish the photographs.
  • When handling the materials, remove only one folder from the box at a time. This allows us to keep the collections organized for everyone’s use.
  • Do keep the materials in the folder in order.
  • Do not lean on the materials or force any book to lay flat. You will receive book supports and weighted snakes if necessary and the archives staff will demonstrate how to use them properly. This ensures the preservation of the materials
  • If you are using photographic materials, the archives staff will provide you with white gloves for handling the materials. This ensures that the oils on your hands do not harm the photographic materials

What is ScholarWorks?

ScholarWorks is a California State University (CSU) online platform where you can find documents and publications created by the any of the CSU schools faculty, students, and staff.

What can I find in ScholarWorks?

You can explore:

  • University theses and dissertations written by students
  • Research publications from faculty
  • Student projects and other academic works

How do I add my thesis to ScholarWorks?

The de facto national library of the United States. Explore the Library of Congress for access to the catalog, digital collections, and online exhibits.

National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)
Visit the NARA Homepage, the official national archives of the U.S., offering access to its catalog of finding aids, digital materials, and helpful guides for starting archival research.

National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC)
Sponsored by the Library of Congress, the NUCMC helps locate manuscript collections in various repositories and offers tips on searching for specific manuscripts.

 Online Archive of California (OAC)
The OAC provides access to archival finding aids from over 150 repositories across California, including digital materials. The Cal State East Bay University Archives is part of this resource.
