Exhibit Backstory

At the beginning of 2009, history was heavy on our minds here in the Library: In January we had the inauguration of Barack Obama as president, and, a week later, two historic figures shared the same 200th birthday: U.S. president Abraham Lincoln and English naturalist and geologist Charles Darwin.

Linda Dobb, as the new University Librarian, felt we should recognize all three events by creating an exhibit for each. You'll find the Darwin poster and exhibit materials in this Exhibit Guide, and the Lincoln materials here.

Exhibit Promotional Statement:

200th Birthday of Charles Darwin!

The CSUEB Library Exhibit Commemorates Darwin's Birth

Charles Darwin, the famed 19th-century naturalist who brought about a revolution in the sciences, and who effectively changed the way we all look at our world, was born February 12, 1809 (Darwin shares the exact same birthday with Abraham Lincoln – who is celebrated elsewhere in the Library throughout Spring Quarter 2009).

We invite you to visit our Darwin display on the second floor of the Library in the Upper Mall Gallery (near the Library Administration Office) between February 12th and June 15th.

Among the books included, is a rare 1845 edition of Darwin’s notes that he made during the voyage of the Beagle, the ship that carried him on his famous journey of exploration that eventually resulted in his discovery of the theory of evolution: Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries Visited During the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle Round the World : Under the Command of Capt. Fitz Roy, R.N.
