NASA has selected two new, creative research proposals to develop small, space-based instruments that will tackle these fundamental questions about our home planet and its environment.

Jan. 30, 2018: An international team of scientists has developed a strategy to boost people's ability to adapt to climate change.

Their mission: "The American Geographical Society (AGS) advances and promotes geography in business, government, science, and education. Our goal is to enhance the nation’s geographic literacy so as to engender sound public policy, national security, and human well-being worldwide."

This nonprofit scientific and educational society wasf founded in 1904 with the goal of contributing to the advancement of geography. Its members come from more than 60 countries and are interested in the theory, methods, and practice of geography.

Their mission: "The USGS serves the Nation by providing reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life."

Launched in July 2014, this provides access to 178,000 historical topographic map sheets created from 1884 to 2006, covering the entire U.S. at nearly all of the published scales. It supersedes the U.S. paper map archive.

This long-term, interdisciplinary social science research programme was developed under the auspices of the International Human Dimensions program on Global Environmental Change. It began in January 2009 and will end in 2018.

This scientific intergovernmental body is part of the United Nations. It was created in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme. Their reports, based on a review of the scientific literature, cover "the scientific, technical and socio-economic information relevant to understanding the scientific basis of risk of human-induced climate change, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation."

This intergovernmental organization promotes global environmental protection, focusing on promoting activities, technologies, economies, and renewable energies which are environment friendly, and reducing the impact of climate change. The goal of the organization is to turn declarations into implementable actions and to support the protection of the environment and climate at an international level.

This group was founded in 1990 as the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives and is an international association of local governments and national and regional local government organizations that have made a commitment to sustainable development.

Their mission: "Greenpeace is the leading independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and to promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future."
