Welcome to the Blood at the Root Study Guide. This guide is meant as an open-source series of gateways into learning about the play, the themes it addresses (racism, white supremacy, police misconduct, criminal justice, and others,) and the context for all of this within United States culture.
It is not necessarily a comprehensive resource list, but rather an online community site to engage with ideas, materials, and other people. We will be adding to the site throughout the semester as we lead up to the premiere of Blood at the Root in early November, 2020. Please let us know if there is something you'd like to see here that is missing, or something you'd like to add. We look forward to connecting with you through this study guide.

A note from the faculty in the Department of History at Cal State East Bay: These selections are not intended to be comprehensive; they rather suggest sources and resources that are accessible and have resonated among Cal State East Bay students investigating the historical context for Dominique Morrisseau's play, Blood at the Root. We have made an effort to include Bay Area or California connections and authors. Some of these sources are perhaps less widely known, and can be considered in addition to other key works identified by departments and offices at Cal State East Bay.
