The Beat Goes On: Celebrating the Bay Poetry Collection

Hayward Campus Library
March 2018-December 2018

The University Libraries are proud to announce a new exhibit, The Beat Goes On: Celebrating the Bay Poetry Collection. Running through the end of the year at the Hayward Campus Library, the exhibit highlights selections from the Bay Poetry Collection. This collection features volumes and broadsides written by poets from the Bay Area.

The banners on the Lower and Upper Mall contextualize the collection through a chronological overview of the poetry movements in the Bay Area, while the display cases showcase a small selection of the many items held in Special Collections. Volumes and broadsides may be viewed in the Reading Room by appointment.

A sample of the banners, along with banner text and source attributions can be found in the online exhibit: https://library.csueastbay.edu/current_exhibits/bay_poetry

Highlight, Promote, Communicate: Graphic Design for Librarians

March 16, 2018
2:00 pm
Biella Room (LI 2126)

Do you create flyers, bookmarks, handouts, or newsletters for your library?

Ever wonder how you could design these for better visual communication?

In this book talk, Dr. Wakimoto discusses how librarians, who are often the de facto graphic designers for their libraries, can use design concepts and best practices for more effective visual communication. Part art, part science, all about solving problems and communicating, she argues that graphic design is one of the most important aspects of librarianship. Drawing on examples from her recently published book, Easy Graphic Design for Librarians: From Color to Kerning, and common library graphic design projects, Dr. Wakimoto explains what works, what doesn’t, and simple ways to improve communication that anyone—not only librarians—can implement.

Easy Graphic Design: From Color to Kerning is now available via ALA Editions

Faculty Lecture: Uncovering the Nature of Dark Matter

Derek F. Jackson Kimball, Professor of Physics
March 15, 2018
12:00 pm
Biella Room (LI 2126)

Over 80% of the mass in the universe is made up of an invisible substance known as dark matter. Evidence of dark matter's gravitational pull on stars and galaxies has been found by a wide variety of astrophysical observations. But what exactly is dark matter? This is a complete mystery. There are a number of interesting hypotheses that are being tested by experiments throughout the world.

Cal State East Bay is leading two different international collaborations to test if dark matter might be made of particles known as axions. In the Cosmic Axion Spin Precession Experiment (CASPEr), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques are being used to search for oscillating dipoles induced by an axion dark matter field. The Global Network of Optical Magnetometers to search for Exotic physics (GNOME) is a worldwide array of atomic magnetometers that searches for transient signals that would be generated if the Earth passed through an invisible axion "wall" or "star." We will report on initial results from both experiments.
