Open Access: An Overview and Best Practices

This presentation will provide an overview of Open Access (OA) in scholarly communication, including:
- its relationship to "traditional" publishing
- the various stages of the scholarly research life cycle, from preprints through previously published research outputs
- aspects of OA that especially concern faculty, such as author rights and funding mandates
- an overview of several relevant OA policies, particularly the University of California Academic Senate Open Access Policy, and the importance of faculty involvement in the creation and implementation of these policies
