This presentation will provide an overview of Open Access (OA) in scholarly communication, including:

  • its relationship to "traditional" publishing
  • the various stages of the scholarly research life cycle, from preprints through previously published research outputs
  • aspects of OA that especially concern faculty, such as author rights and funding mandates
  • an overview of several relevant OA policies, particularly the University of California Academic Senate Open Access Policy, and the importance of faculty involvement in the creation and implementation of these policies
