While the medical field is one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States, the public health field goes beyond the simple delivery of medical care and includes prevention, policy, and community-based interventions. This creates an immense demand for jobs and opens up possibilities and opportunities for students who may be interested in pursuing a career in the health professions. 
 

PH 100 is the introductory course in the Health Sciences program. Whether you are still exploring the PH major or have already entered the PH major knowing what you want to pursue upon graduation, it can be overwhelming to navigate the opportunities available and steps to reaching your dream job in the health field, which does not necessarily have to include nursing or providing medical care. 
 

This course aims to introduce important concepts (basic knowledge and skills) students need to know as they plan for careers in the health field. These include an introduction to healthcare and delivery in the U.S. from an interdisciplinary perspective focusing on critical thinking, effective communication, research and writing, and team building skills in tackling complex health care challenges. The emphasis is on introducing students to self-directed learning skills that are critical for the health profession. A basic foundation in proper research and writing skills along with teamwork will be necessary to begin tackling complex health care challenges.
 

This guide is meant to work in conjunction with Professor Engelman’s HSC100 course, including an exploration of career paths. Especially critical is developing writing and research skills including a familiarity and comfort with APA format and the ability to write based on library resources. Use the tabs on the left to navigate through different components of this class.
