Literature Reviews

A guide to help you get started with conducting a literature review

Creating an Annotation

When you find a source, it's important to take notes on what you have learned about it. You don't want to have to flip through a long article every time to find the most important bits of information.

Often this means creating an annotation - which is a short summary of the source, as well as how it was useful to your research project.

Purdue OWL suggests the following ways to think of an annotation:

  1. Summarize - short summary of your source
  2. Assess - was this a helpful source for your project? how so?
  3. Reflect - how does this fit into my project?

What other techniques do you know of for taking notes on a source?

Look for themes

Once you have your sources, start to look for themes in what has been written. This will help you draw connections between your sources. A good technique to consider is to create a mind map built around your research topic. Check out the video below, or watch it on YouTube.

Citation Managers

Your sources should be organized - consider using a Citation Manager for this as it allows you to keep your articles and sources together. And even helps you output a bibliography!
