What Do We Mean by Personal Finance and Financial Literacy?

Personal Finance

Investopia offers the following definition of personal finance:

"All financial decisions and activities of an individual, this could include budgeting, insurance, savings, investing, debt servicing, mortgages and more. Financial planning generally involves analyzing your current financial position and predicting short-term and long-term needs... Personal finance looks at how your money and future is managed... For example personal finance would include monitoring your spending, budgeting for an emergency fund, and paying down debt."

Financial Literacy

The National Financial Educators Council defines financial literacy as:

“[P]ossessing the skills and knowledge on financial matters to confidently take effective action that best fulfills an individual’s personal, family and global community goals.”

The Canadian site GetSmarterAboutMoney.ca defines financial literacy as:

"[T]he ability to make appropriate decisions in managing their personal finances," and further describes it as being "the set of skills and knowledge that allow you to understand:

  1. The financial principles you need to know to make informed financial decisions, and
  2. The financial products that impact your financial well-being."
