Reimagining the Demonized

Centering Ethnic Studies Pedagogies in the new school design of the Homies Empowerment Community High School for Oakland Success (H.E.C.H.O.S.)

G. Reyes, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Department of Educational Leadership

When: Thursday, October 17, 2019 from 12:15pm – 1:15pm
Where: Library Biella Room
Refreshments will be served

"Reimagining the Demonized" seeks to disrupt the research tradition of ascribing certain marginalized groups of people as singularly damaged, lacking, and/or "evil."

Specifically, this body of work investigates the sacred knowledge and critical strengths that emerge from the new school design and design process for the Homies Empowerment Community High School for Oakland Success (HECHOS), which centers upon the needs, experiences, and aspirations of gang involved, affiliated, impacted and/or incarcerated youth.

The sacred knowledge that is emerging from this work highlights tremendous growth areas that the field of "school reform" has yet to address. "Reimagining the Demonized" aims to contribute to the process of dismantling practices within schools that maintain systems of oppression and push out historically marginalized students.

This event is open to the public.
