The Student Center for Academic Achievement (SCAA) is your bridge to academic success.

When you come to the SCAA, you will encounter a talented and capable staff of Peer Leaders and Front Desk Team members who will do their best to help you succeed. A SCAA tutor's primary goal is to help you discover and develop strategies that will empower your own learning and enhance those skills you already possess. A SCAA tutor's role is not to edit or proofread your papers, or do your work for you. Rather, SCAA tutors will work together with you to help you become a self-empowered, independent, and successful student.

Benefits of tutoring include:

Connections with fellow students
- All SCAA tutors have demonstrated success on campus and have been recommended by faculty members
Built-in study time
- Students can build SCAA appointments into their weekly study routines. Online and in-person support is available.
Increased self-confidence and independence
- Through one-on-one appointments, students and tutors can work in partnership to individualize support and focus on skill development for the future
Improved subject comprehension or writing skills
- Participation in tutoring may result in better preparation and understanding, which may have a positive impact on assignment grades or overall performance in a course

I want to become a better writer. How can SCAA Writing Tutors help?

We recommend that you make frequent appointments with SCAA writing tutors, so that you can pick up tips and guidelines gradually and apply those to all of your writing assignments. Keep in mind that writing is a lifelong process. Be patient with yourself.

Creating Seamless Research Assistance within Canvas

For the Spring semester the Library has implemented a new feature to assist students in their research. Within each course shell in Canvas, a student can find a link to a Library Guide that suggests resources (books, article databases, videos and other materials) to help them write their papers, answer discussion board inquiries, and even prepare for their presentations.For example, if a student is in INFO 310, when they go into the Canvas course shell for that class, they will find a new link in the left hand column: Library Guide (pictured below). By clicking on that link, students can find help in using various Library resources. The link will lead them to the best places to get articles about Sustainability, statistics that may support their research, the name and picture of the subject librarian who can help them get started or provide more in-depth information, and several other valuable links.We hope you will try it yourself and if we can add something you think would help students, please offer suggestions! Library Newsletter: Workshops, Exhibits, Research Assistance in Canvas, and More

January 22, 2025 EditionFrom the Dean of Libraries, Kristin HartDuring my first semester, I have been fortunate to meet with many of the University's dedicated faculty, staff and students who are also some of the biggest fans of our University Libraries.They all love the CORE! And, they are eager to work with our Library faculty and staff to continue making this building the bustling heart of East Bay.More specifically, we heard from our student workers that the CORE is doing great as a resource, but still could use some help in defining more quiet spaces for study, more signage, and more publicity about its services. From our student government (ASI) we heard that it would be helpful to our commuter students if we had a place to nap between classes. And, from our daily patrons we were urged to extend hours and provide more programming.Happily, we are already at work responding to many of these suggestions. On the 2nd floor, we are adding a snooze lounge with a nap pod, zero gravity chairs and other items to make a cozy and inviting space for students who need a place to rest on campus. In addition, the Core building will now open at 7:30 a.m. from Monday-Friday. And, our Librarians will be offering additional sessions for everyone on how to use our databases, citation formats, and creating annotated bibliographies.Stay tuned! We will be trying to share the news about our services more broadly and we will continue to seek your input. The display features artifacts that shed light on the workers' experiences, from tools and dishware to game pieces and animal bones. It also explores the anti-Chinese sentiment of the era, providing a window into the challenges and resilience of these laborers.Congratulations to the students in ANTH 377 (Fall 2024) & to the CE Smith Museum at Cal State East Bay for creating an eye opening and well designed exhibit.Other upcoming events in the CORE: book talks by College of Education faculty member Katherine Strom and local author John Machado, an all-night Hackathon in the Entrepreneurship Space, and more exhibits in the main lobby and other areas of the CORE.
