JSTOR
This is a database of mostly full-text scholarly articles. There are substantial holdings in music, going back to the early 1800′s. For best results, use the Advanced Search and experiment with selecting specific disciplines (e.g., Music). JSTOR is an abbreviation for Journal STORage.

Find this in the Reference section at REF ML102.P66 C66 2003This is a seven-volume scholarly encyclopedia covering a wide range of popular music and organized by topic and geography. There is an index in each volume and that is probably the best way to find what you need. The six volumes are: v. 1. Media, industry and society — v. 2. Performance and production — v. 3. Caribbean and Latin America — v. 4. North America — v. 5. Asia and Oceania — v. 6. Africa and the Middle East — v. 7. Europe

The Garland encyclopedia of world music
This is a ten-volume set about music (art music, vernacular music, etc.) throughout the world, organized by geographic region. This is a wonderful resource for ethnomusicology. It is in the Reference section at REF ML100 .G16 1997.

A database of streaming audio of primarily western classical (i.e. art) music. The emphasis is on baroque, classical, and romantic periods, though there are a small number of folk, world, and film music examples. This resource provides over 35,000 recordings.
